The series “Figures” is inspired by the Henry James short story “The Figure in the Carpet” in which the narrator pursues the promise of a hidden theme in the works of a favorite author. In this series, I weave together visual histories and the gendered valences of domestic and institutional spaces. I take as backdrop the braided rug which I deploy as a symbol of economy and utility and a reference to a specific physical location in domestic space. It is in this space that I cite other artists to investigate how context influences meaning and how artistic moves become vernacular.
